Glenn Laycock, who lives in the R.M. of Saltcoats, rode his e-bike thirty-two miles to Bird’s Point at Round Lake this past Tuesday. Glenn is 91 years old and intended to use this journey as an opportunity to raise money for a good cause. Glenn is fundraising to help the Lakeside Manor Care Home in Saltcoats as they are looking to add a ceiling lift which will help mobility-challenged residents out of their bed.
Mr. Laycock said, “This started way back in 1938. My father and I biked down to Bird’s Point, Round Lake. I figured, maybe I could do it again. While I’m at it, I figured I might as well raise money for some good cause, and that’s what I’m trying to do.”
When Glenn was eight years old he and his dad took this journey for the first time. This venture was his second time travelling the route in this manner. He mentioned he’s been there lots of times by car, but it’s not quite the same adventure as it is on a bicycle.
Glenn was inspired by the journey decades ago, and found a way to funnel a trip down memory lane into a tremendous fundraiser.
“I’m going to ride my bike from my home here on the farm. I was born here and have lived here ever-since,” Glenn stated. “It’s another adventure late in my years.”
Mr. Laycock started his journey around 11:15 A.M on Tuesday, October 19. The journey took just under four hours. He was supported by his family throughout the trip. His journey took him down the Atwater grid road then toward the junction of highways #9 and #22 East near Stockholm. Glenn planned to stop every 20 km to take a little rest and have a drink of water.
After finishing the journey, Glenn wanted to say that, “I was able to complete my second journey on a bicycle. All went well and I am satisfied with my accomplishment.” He added, “I would like to thank everyone for the kind pledges and I will continue accepting pledges until the end of October.”
Glenn wanted to add that donations can be made to the care home anytime. Pledges have totalled over $4300 so far.
