Local athletes made their presence known in the Prairie Girls Football League this season, with standout efforts from Nicole Griffin, Ava Smith, and Chayce Becker of Churchbridge, as well as Hayden Shipp, Tally Shipp, and Piper Giles of Langenburg. Together, they helped deliver an action-packed season filled with talent, determination, and memorable moments.
The Prairie Girls Football League recently wrapped up another season. This year saw many spectacular plays, incredible performances and more exciting action than you can shake a stick at. At the start of league play on August 22nd five teams had their sights set on a league championship but unfortunately when the season concluded only four remained. The South East Viragos, Melville Vipers, Moosomin Generals and Yorkton Lady Gridders.
The South East Viragos did not find the win column in the 2025 season but despite that the future looks bright in Estevan. The team did not have many grade 12 players and its Most Valuable Player was Morgan Hase. Hase still has a few years left to play in the PGFL; she proved this year that she is a star on all sides of the ball. Offensively scoring touchdowns, defensively making timely interceptions and tackles. Hase looks to be a cornerstone of the Viragos for years to come.
Hase and the Viragos made the postseason but had a date with the powerhouse Yorkton Lady Gridders. The Lady Gridders had gone unbeaten since the PGFL championship game in 2022 heading into their final regular season game. Yorkton lost that game to Melville but stormed through the Viragos, setting up a return to the championship.
To pick just one person as team MVP would be next to impossible. They received contributions from everyone on the roster. Hayden Shipp, Ally Madsen, Makayla Winters, Ryleigh Fatteicher were just a few of the players to make significant impacts for Yorkton this season.
The Melville Vipers finished second in the regular season standings and looked poised to make it back to the league championship to defend their 2024 crown. Led by Charlotte Henderson the Vipers met up with the Moosomin Generals in the semifinals. Unfortunately for Henderson disaster struck early in the game. The star athlete left due to injury and did not return. The Vipers gave it a valiant effort but wound up bowing out to the Moosomin Generals in the semifinals.
“Charlotte was our on the field leader.” Coach Darren Mountenay says, “She would do whatever she could for her team, always leading by example. Running the extra yard, never going down without a fight, or chasing the play to get a block in after she handed the ball off. She knew how to motivate and involve everyone, leaving no one behind.”
The Moosomin Generals are proof that it’s not how you start but how you finish. They lost their first two games of the season but each week continued to get better. All season long the team was led by Madison Judd. Every time she touched the ball she was a threat to score, and more often than not was able to find the end zone. The versatile player was primarily used as a running back but also played defense and even took snaps at quarterback. Madison Judd takes home the TL Media team MVP honours for the Moosomin Generals.
The championship game was between the Yorkton Lady Gridders and the Moosomin Generals. The game took place in front of a raucous crowd in Yorkton. The heavyweight contest was back and forth, each team going blow for blow. In the end however it was Madison Judd and the rest of the Moosomin Generals capturing the championship.
As the Prairie Girls Football League season draws to a close the league continues to look for players, coaches etc. The game of girls football is fast, hard hitting, intense and on the rise. If you are interested in playing or coaching all you need to do is contact a local team in your area.
