On April 4th, Chaos Lacrosse based out of Esterhazy will host a free clinic for interested athletes for groups aged 6-7 and under, 7-8, 8-9 and older players at the EHS gymnasium.
Rod Day with Chaos Lacrosse mentioned they have blocked off an hour for each age group. Rod mentioned, “The little guys start first at 6 P.M. and go until 7 P.M. We’ll warm them up and run them around. We’ll teach them a few things about scooping and throwing, and playing the game of lacrosse. We’ll get them all sweaty and have them smiling”.
From 7 P.M. until 8 P.M. the 11 to 13 aged athletes will have a chance to participate. Rod mentioned, “We will do the same thing. We’ll start them out, we’ll make sure everybody knows what they’re doing a bit, and we’ll probably finish up with a couple of games with them and just let them experience more of the fun. Once you get to those older kids, it’s hard to lure new bodies out”.
The oldest group, ages 15 to 17s would be from 8 P.M. to 9 P.M.
The clinic is free and no registration is required. The box lacrosse club will bring enough equipment for 12 to 15 kids who may not have their own equipment.
Day spoke about the Chaos box lacrosse program and what to expect in the upcoming year.
“We’re trying to build a 7U, 9U and 11U rec league. This isn’t about going to the NLL. This isn’t about championships. This is about kids getting out and getting lots of touches, learning some skills, and at the end of every practice and at the end of every game having a smile on their face. Whether they’ve accomplished something or not, they’ve got to be cheered on. They’ve got to find success in what they do”.
Rod talked about the sport of lacrosse, saying, “I find that lacrosse is a great game. It’s a hard game. It teaches perseverance. It teaches great life skills”.
The league Chaos Lacrosse is involved in has 4 committed towns already and are working to fill in more teams. “If everything goes good, we have a dream of having a little 4 town league which might turn into an 8 town league this spring.”
The start of the season is dependent on the ice coming out of rinks. The plan is to start practices the week of April 14th. “We’re going to concentrate on one practice a week for all of the age groups, but the practices will be a little bit longer. We’ll probably run them 75 to 90 minutes depending on the age group which will cut down some travel and free up another night of the week for parents. We’re going to play games in a tournament format on Saturdays. There’s plans right now for 4 Saturdays where anywhere from 4 to 8 teams come to town or come to one rink. We’ll play at least 3 games for everybody. The plan is to have a championship two-day tournament to wrap it all up hopefully on the June 7th, 8th weekend. Everybody should get between 6 and 8 practice nights and 4 Saturdays of games and a tournament weekend at the end.”
Those interested in joining the 7U, 9U or 11U league can attend the Friday clinic, email chaoslacrosseclub@outlook.com or view the Chaos Lacrosse Club Facebook page for more information.
