The possibility of football returning to the Esterhazy High School field is getting closer and closer! I spoke with Warrior Football Head Coach and General Manager, Tyler Metz, about this exciting turn of events. Metz broke down what has transpired, and what may be to come.

The Saskatchewan Government recently announced more relaxed measures for sports in Saskatchewan. The Warrior program is classified under High School Football and is governed by three different bodies: Football Saskatchewan, SHSAA, and the Good Spirit School Division. The protocol set forth by these bodies is to be adhered to by the Warrior program. At the time of writing this article, there were still some things up in the air, so no official word has been passed forward to the Warrior program. Metz stressed “the governing bodies have shown solid leadership and great communication through this pandemic, we look forward to working with Football Sask, SHSAA, and GSSD to get the student athletes back on the field as soon as safely possible”.

The Warrior program is a fairly unique situation with a multi-sponsorship team, including student athletes from Esterhazy, Churchbridge, Langenburg and Stockholm Schools. Everyone involved is showing a lot of positivity, leadership, and excitement about the potential return of football. Ultimately when the new protocols are decided, the student athletes’ health and safety are of the utmost importance and will be the top priority. There will be more information available in the next coming weeks, and everyone involved remains optimistic with the positive news about the COVID-19 vaccines. Any news will be available via the Warrior FaceBook page and shared with all the schools involved.

The upcoming games will be the first-time football will be played on the newly upgraded field at Esterhazy High School, donations for the field have been rolling in and are very welcome. Mrs. Huckell and Mr. Erhardt from Esterhazy High School, said, “I believe we still need to raise about $80,000 to pay the SCC loan off.” Please consider donating to the beautiful football field, and make sure to cheer on the players when they return. Any questions, concerns, or to donate, please contact the school at 306-745-6618.
