The Esterhazy High School band recently made waves at the prestigious MusicFest Nationals held at the University of Toronto, marking their debut appearance with an impressive performance and a slew of unforgettable experiences.

“To get to MusicFest Nationals, we had to perform at a high level at last year’s Optimist Festival in Regina,” shared Richelle Matthews, the band’s enthusiastic coordinator. “The adjudicators there recommended our group, and we were thrilled to be chosen.”

Navigating the journey to nationals was no small feat. Thanks to the diligent efforts of the Esterhazy Music Boosters, Inc., who organized fundraisers and handled financial logistics, and the dedication of parent chaperones Becky, Paul, Nicole, Jennifer, and teacher chaperone Ben Fetsch, the trip became a reality.

“This is my first performance at Nationals,” Richelle Matthews reflected. “It was a whirlwind of an experience!” The band received a Silver Rating for their performance and participated in a clinic led by adjudicator Dr. Janet Song Kim, where they received an award for excellence.

As a veteran music educator with 11 years of experience, Richelle Matthews expressed deep passion for fostering musical talent. “My job isn’t work – it’s my passion,” she emphasized. “To see my students excel and create music together brings me immense joy.”

Reflecting on the trip highlights, the band’s Toronto adventure was packed with memorable moments. Besides performing, they explored the Royal Ontario Museum, interacted with marine life at Ripley’s Aquarium, and enjoyed the musical “SIX” about Henry VIII’s wives. Exploring Toronto’s subway system, shopping at Eaton Centre, and ascending the CN Tower added to their adventure.

Looking ahead, Richelle Matthews is optimistic about future opportunities for the band program. “We hope to attend next year’s Optimist Festival in Regina and, with hard work, secure another invitation to Nationals,” she shared.

The trip concluded with fond memories of late-night arrivals, spontaneous handstand competitions, and a heartwarming reunion with Richelle Matthews’s former band director, Kevin Hrycay, who treated the students to lunch.

As the Esterhazy High School band returned home with newfound inspiration and lasting memories, their journey to MusicFest Nationals will undoubtedly resonate as a milestone in their musical careers.
