The Town of Esterhazy is launching an initiative in 2024 to modernize its water utility with the installation of advanced water meters, aiming to increase accuracy, streamline meter readings, and provide greater operational efficiencies. This upgrade, a transition from manual meter reading to Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) technology, is part of a broader plan to support sustainable practices and elevate service quality for the community. Previously, Esterhazy utilized the manual meter reading technology before skipping past the AMR technology towards the current AMI abilities which provides advanced capacity over the manual system they had before.
According to Michael Martin, Vice-President of Technology for Metercor Inc., AMI technology provides enhanced capabilities over the previous Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) systems. “AMI meters create a wireless network that connects smart meters to our data platforms,” said Martin. “They use a secure radio signal to receive and transmit data, making it easier to monitor water consumption accurately and in real-time.” He explained that the new meters offer daily data reporting, acoustic leak detection, and temperature monitoring, all while maintaining health and safety standards as well as Health Canada’s guidelines.
Why the Upgrade?
The existing water meters, many of which have aged past their intended lifespan, often provide inaccurate readings or fail altogether. The new digital Kamstrup water meters, which are expected to last 20 years, feature ultrasonic technology for precision and durability, ensuring accurate readings in areas with hard water, which typically impacts older, mechanical meters.
“These meters will be connected to two radio gateways on the Esterhazy water tower, which securely transmit data to town staff. The system reduces the need for manual meter reading and supports leak detection capabilities, alerting homeowners to leaks they might not notice themselves,” Martin added.
Booking and Installation Options
Esterhazy residents can book installation appointments through multiple channels to accommodate diverse schedules. Options include a call center, a 24/7 online booking portal, Saturday appointments, and in-person scheduling assistance at the town hall.
Enhanced Privacy and Security
Privacy and data security are key considerations in the new system. The Kamstrup meters operate on a secure, encrypted 450 MHz channel, transmitting data to a cloud-based portal that only town staff with authorization can access. This approach complies with federal privacy laws and ensures resident information remains protected.
AMI vs. AMR Meters
Michael Martin explained that AMR (Automatic Meter Reading) meters are not considered smart meters and typically rely on older, analog technology. These meters have basic capabilities and generally measure water consumption only once per day or month. To collect data, a utility worker must either physically connect via a touch pad on the property or read the meter from a short distance by walking or driving past it.
AMI (Advanced Metering Infrastructure) meters are part of a sophisticated wireless network, allowing real-time data exchange between smart meters and utility operators. AMI meters use radio signals to transmit detailed consumption data securely, meeting Health Canada’s Safety Code 6 standards. They offer advanced features such as hourly usage updates, pressure monitoring, temperature tracking, and acoustic leak detection, all transmitted with minimal power. AMI meters alert utility operators to critical conditions, like potential leaks, in near real-time, providing a more efficient and accurate system that supports proactive maintenance and customer service improvements.
Future-Forward Vision
Esterhazy’s water meter upgrade is part of a larger community master plan, including the construction of a new water treatment plant and improvements to local healthcare facilities. These infrastructure advancements reflect the town’s commitment to fostering sustainability and improving residents’ quality of life. The council hopes that these investments will provide long-term benefits, making Esterhazy an attractive, future-ready place to live for generations to come.
