Introduction
Grant Forster has been serving as the mayor of Esterhazy for the past term and a half, following his initial election in 2018. With a commitment to community engagement and improvement, he is seeking re-election in the upcoming municipal election. Forster reflects on his achievements and ongoing projects, including the new hospital and water treatment facility, while emphasizing the importance of community involvement and responsible governance.
You’ve been mayor for a while now. What has your experience been like, and what are you looking forward to in your next term?
I came into office in 2018 after Roy Spence resigned and was re-elected uncontested in 2020. Over the past term, I’ve seen significant community interest, with nine candidates running for council this election—an encouraging sign that people are engaged and willing to contribute.
One of my key projects has been advocating for a new hospital and current home facility, which has been a priority for many years. I’ve been involved since day one, and I take pride in being part of the team that pushed this initiative forward. Seeing our project move into the planning stages has been incredibly rewarding, and I’m excited about continuing this work as we approach the final announcement.
You mentioned the new hospital. How does that fit into your vision for the town?
The hospital project is pivotal for our community’s health services. I’ve actively participated in discussions with various health groups, and I was present when funding for the planning stages was announced. I’m currently chairing the health committee, which keeps me involved on a daily basis. It’s thrilling to know that I’m part of something that will have a lasting impact on Esterhazy.
What about the water treatment facility? Can you elaborate on that?
The water treatment facility has been a long-term project, predating my tenure. We faced challenges in securing funding but succeeded after refining our proposal. This facility is significant for providing high-quality water not just for our town, but also for neighboring communities, including towns and farms. It’s a project that enhances our regional cooperation and is something I’m proud to have contributed to.
What other infrastructure projects are in the works?
We recently collaborated with the Lions Club on an accessible playground, which serves the southern end of town. This was a joint effort, and it’s great to see community organizations stepping up. The playground, along with new basketball and tennis courts, represents our commitment to enhancing recreational facilities for all residents.
How do your personal interests and beliefs influence your role as mayor?
I’ve lived in Esterhazy for over 58 years, and this community feels like home. My commitment to improving quality of life here is deeply personal. I’ve volunteered extensively in various community initiatives, and my return to politics stemmed from a desire to bring stability during a turbulent time. I believe in working collaboratively and responsibly to create a better environment for all residents.
What is your perspective on the town’s relationship with the RCMP? Do you feel they have adequate resources?
We are fortunate to have an RCMP presence in our town, which many communities lack. However, we’re currently understaffed, and having only two officers covering a vast area at one time is not ideal. I want to advocate for filling those vacancies to ensure we have the policing necessary for a safe community. The officers here are dedicated, often engaging with local youth and participating in community events, which strengthens our relationship with law enforcement.
Taxation is often a contentious issue. How do you approach it?
Taxation is a necessary but sensitive topic. We strive to maintain reasonable tax rates while ensuring essential services are funded. My approach has always been to spend public money wisely and transparently. While tax increases are never popular, they can be necessary to provide the services residents expect. My focus is on finding a balance that maintains the quality of life in Esterhazy without overburdening taxpayers.
