When it was announced that team Sherry Anderson would be Saskatchewan’s representative at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts this year, many people had many different opinions on the subject.
One person who was over-the-moon excited was Chaelynn Kitz of Oxbow, Saskatchewan. She plays second on the team and is looking forward to the experience. “CurlSask hadn’t said much since December how the representative was going to be chosen because they were hoping for a provincial [championship].”
The decision to not have provincials was disappointing but not entirely surprising. When it comes to playing at the Scotties, Kitz describes herself as “Nervous but super excited. It’s a different year, but I’ll be taking everything in.”
She is no stranger to curling at high levels. “I won the 2014 Saskatchewan winter games. Kitz says, “I won 2018 mixed doubles with Brayden Stewart.”
“I have been to mixed double nationals twice. I also was supposed to go last year but because of COVID-19 it was cancelled and I just recently received my invite for this year for a couple weeks after the Scotties.”
She lost the final last year in women’s field but Kitz ended up receiving the Marj Mitchell Award for excellence in play and sportsmanship.
Kitz’s family has roots in Langenburg and Churchbridge. Speaking about her family, Kitz said, ”They are both very excited!”
Kitz mentioned, “They know my dream has been the Scotties for as long as my curling career has been going.”
Chaelynn’s dad will be in attendance at the event because he also coaches the team. All the action gets started on February 19th. Team Saskatchewan begins its quest for a championship on February 20th at 8:30 A.M. against Suzanne Birt and the team from Prince Edward Island.
