Avery Layh is continuing a Layh family tradition of 30 years of legal services to Langenburg and surrounding communities, begun in 1994 by her father, Donald Layh, recently retired Judge of the Court of King’s Bench. Since articling with her father at Layh & Associates Legal Professional Corporation in 2011 and, after his appointment to the Court in 2014, Avery worked at the Brooks Mack Law Firm. There, she continued to provide legal services to clients that her father had served over his 28-year legal career, particularly credit unions, leasing companies and co-operatives.
Avery has recently announced the opening of her new law firm – Layh Law Company. She has opened her newly formed law firm in the original home of the Layh Law Office, the historic house built by Dr. McManus in 1946, at 216 Road Avenue East. The house is one of Langenburg’s most historic homes.
Avery relies upon her 12-year experience in finance, real estate, collection and estate planning law to provide legal services to clients in surrounding communities and throughout the province. Avery is known for her practical approach to solving problems, efficient handling of commercial transactions and her ability to present a convincing argument before the court.
Avery has gained the confidence of not only her clients, but other law firms throughout the province who have frequently chosen her to be the court’s appointed selling officer in judicial sale orders. She has successfully argued cases before the Court of Queen’s Bench, Court of King’s Bench and the Court of Appeal of Saskatchewan. In July 2023, she attended the Cambridge Lectures at Queen’s College in Cambridge, England where she engaged with legal academics and judges from several Canadian courts, including judges of the Supreme Court of Canada.
Avery studied fine art and history at the Universities of Manitoba and Saskatchewan. In 2009 she entered law school at the College of Law, University of Saskatchewan. In 2010, she completed her second term at the University of Canberra in Australia, an experience that typified her fondness for international travel.
Involvement in continuing legal education has been one of Avery’s priorities. As part of the Law Society of Saskatchewan and the Canadian Bar Association’s continuing education to lawyers, Avery has presented on foreclosure and collection matters. She has also taught courses on judgment enforcement, collection, bankruptcy matters, personal property security and estate planning. Avery is a member of the Manitoba and Saskatchewan Bar Associations.
Although Avery is primarily focused on raising her family and practicing law, she continues her interests in the arts. Avery has been a member of the Langenburg Arts Council since 2011 and continues to paint in her free time.
Joining Avery in opening her new office are legal assistants Pamela Rathgeber and Brigette Olson. Pamela returned to her hometown of Russell, Manitoba, after graduating from the University of Brandon with a Bachelor of Education in 2011. Pamela and her husband then settled in Langenburg in 2013, with Pamela accepting a position with Brooks Mack Law a few years later. Over the eight years Pamela worked as a legal assistant, she gained valuable knowledge and experience in general administration, corporate, collection and real estate matters. She looks forward to new challenges as she moves into a more specialized area of law at Layh Law Company. Pamela passionately supports her boys in soccer, downhill ski racing and karate.
Brigette is originally from Winnipeg, Manitoba. She settled in Langenburg in 2016 with her partner and is enjoying the slower pace of life Langenburg provides. After graduating from the University of Winnipeg in 2013, Brigette worked in various professions from supportive living homes to an administrator in a tax firm. Brigette has an obvious passion for people and learning. When Brigette is not working, she is enjoying home improvement projects with her partner, volunteering at the local thrift store or spending time with her puppy, Dolly.
Law Layh Company welcomes you to join in an open house at 216 Road Avenue from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm on Thursday, November 21, 2024.
