Local singing artist, Katie Morgan, is on a steady path forward to realizing her dreams of being a recording star. Recently, I had the chance to contact the Saltcoats artist and discuss her progress in the music industry.
Katie got her start in music when she began taking vocal lessons and getting trained in classical music at the age of six. Since then, she has sung at music festivals, singing competitions and talent shows and at the age of twelve she began writing her own music as a means of emotional expression.
Katie has always known that she wanted music to be a part of her life but when she was about 15 years old she made the decision to really take it seriously. “I just realized it was what I had always wanted to do and I didn’t really want to do anything else,” she says. Since making that decision, she has hired a manager, started working out and dieting to keep herself healthy and she tries to write something every two days.
Katie would classify her music as fitting into the rock genre, but she also blends in elements of pop music such as synth sounds and electronic sirens. She enjoys singing rock music because of the grit that she gets to incorporate into the vocals.
Growing up, Katie listened to artists like Nickelback which has had an influence on her music but her more recent inspirations have been artists like Halestrom, Bring Me The Horizon, In This Moment and Billie Eilish.
In order to practice and train her voice, she sings for about one hour every day. She has also started eating healthier which helps to keep her vocal chords strong. When writing music, she sets a timer for five minutes and writes as much as she can. She finds that the timer helps her let her ideas flow without overthinking everything. Katie says that she often finds it challenging to not be too much of a perfectionist when it comes to lyrics.
Already in her young singing career, Katie has had many impressive accomplishments including winning Saskatchewan’s Next Big Star competition, competing in GX94 Star Search and releasing a few singles. Katie was also recently in Las Vegas at Hideout studios to record music with Kane Churko and work on a single.
Katie is very passionate about making music and has many dreams and aspirations for her music career. “I love working with music because not only is fun and I could do it for hours at a time, but it’s an emotional vent and it’s how I express myself as a person. At this point my songs are like my identity,” she says.
“I would love to just keep growing as an artist and get to a point where music can be what I do full time for the rest of my life. That would be the best thing in the world to me.”
Be sure to take a look at Katie’s current and upcoming singles and follow her and her music on social media!
