To say Saltcoats’ Alex Morrison is enjoying being back in Yorkton would probably be an understatement. The forward was dealt from the Melville Millionaires to the Yorkton Terriers just before the regular season began. The nineteen-year-old fan favourite is fitting in well with his new team. In five games this season, Morrison has four goals and two assists for six points in five contests. This past week, he was named SJHL Canterra Seeds Saskatchewan Player of the Week.
On Saturday night, Morrison scored the opening goal against the Flin Flon Bombers. He also added a couple of assists en route to a 6-3 win over Flin Flon. Morrison continued his hot play on Monday in Weyburn. He scored another goal, added another assist, and even got in a fight for what is known as a Gordie Howe Hat Trick.
Morrison was acquired in a trade with the Melville Millionaires. Terriers Head Coach Emery Olauson is happy to have the local product in the lineup. “We really liked Alex even though he’s been an opponent of ours for the last couple of years,” Olauson says. “It feels like he plays great in this building, obviously very familiar with it. Whenever we played against Melville, it felt like he was a guy we were watching. He fits the way we play so well. He works so hard, I think he’s very proud to be a Yorkton Terrier now.”
Morrison is thriving in his return to Yorkton and is grateful to be back in a familiar environment. “I think the transition has been pretty easy considering I played Yorkton Minor hockey my whole entire career,” Morrison says. Morrison steps into a leadership role with the club, a role he is excited to take on with his new club. “All the guys welcome you well when I came, and, you know, having experience in the room, just, I just try to give the boys knowledge that they can learn from.”
Morrison and the Terriers are back in action on Friday when they have a home and home series with the Melville Millionaires.
