The Town of Langenburg opened their regularly scheduled council meeting at 7 P.M. on August 15th.
The council began the meeting by reviewing their financials for the previous month.
After motioning to pay the bills, the council moved on to the town foreman’s report.
Council will look into applying for a provincial grant to assist with water flow outside of town. There are potholes in town being repaired. There are some trees being cut around town but the back alleys still need to be done. The council offered a future fundraising idea where non-profit groups could paint the fire hydrants around town under supervision; a motion was made to advertise for the fundraising opportunity at $20/hydrant. Town staff trimmed some trees obstructing the line of site driving around town.
A delegation was present to talk to the council at 7:30.
Bobbi-Jo Webber, former treasurer with Langenburg Minor Ball along with Melissa (current treasurer) and James Moore (current president) presented to the council regarding a proposal. Minor Ball has about $40,000 in reserves and they said they need to do improvements to the ball fields. The goal is to recoup these costs by hosting provincial tournaments (U13 softball, and 11U & 15U baseball provincials). The last provincials held in 2021 brought in over $12,000 in one weekend. There are also benefits to businesses around town from all the visitors coming to these ball tournaments. The group is looking for labour, expertise and equipment to help with the updates. Most of the cost would be purchasing the shale and the transportation, some of the transportation cost will be covered through donations of transportation from Fatteicher Industries, Fatteicher Trucking and Boundary Trucking.
Minor Ball is looking for grants, and plans to reach out to the community to help with fundraising. There are over 150 kids registered in baseball this year.
James Moore, President of Minor Ball explained the plans for the diamond for this year and the coming year.
Diamond #1 is proposed to get 150 cubic yards of A base. The diamond requires sloping so there is effective drainage before topping it with shale. The diamond will require weeping tile after the slope is created. The shale will also help shed the water.
Diamond #4 (used by 15U, 13U, 11U baseball teams) needs resloping and to be topped with shale in a future year.
Diamond #5 hosts all the softball age groups. The diamond needs to be more user friendly for U9 to U13 teams with updates to the base paths with some shale.
Diamond #2 needs shale as the current material turns to mud since it’s been broken down so badly. The diamond will be re-topped with shale.
Green Infrastructure Partners (GIP) is willing to donate an amount to fund the shale required for the project; Russell Redi-Mix Concrete a division of GIP.
The goal is to get diamond #1, #2 and #5 done this year if possible so the new ground material can sit before next spring season. Minor Ball said the project is financially feasible if labour, equipment and expertise can be donated by the town.
After the delegation presentation, CAO Joanne Weinheimer gave the office report saying she is easing into her new position. There has been 1 interviewee for the recreation director position so far and more resumes have been delivered to the town office. There was a three-page complaint letter sent to the office regarding the swimming pool staff and the town attended a recent meeting with the lifeguards.
The community development committee mentioned Bridge Road Developments was here on Monday and was on site wanting to do some line locates. Bridge Road will be mobilizing to the site soon.
The transportation committee mentioned that residents are finding it difficult to walk past the construction on the new Credit Union building as there are no sidewalks available. There will be some no-parking signs put up to help keep the area free of vehicles. The concern will increase as school resumes and winter arrives. The council will see if the current fence can be moved backward and a temporary walkway be formed.
The council is looking into tarring spots on the town roads to patch and help extend the life of the road.
Bumper to Bumper sent a request to the town to alter a portion of sidewalk as they are planning to extend their building. The council will talk to the company for further clarity on the topic.
There will be a ratepayers meeting held on October 19th.
